Ajax's Davinson Sanchez 'would like to play for Barcelona'

Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez is open to a potential move to Barcelona amid reports the club have continued to monitor his progress this season.

Barca had a deal in place to sign Sanchez last summer, but the 20-year-old opted to join Ajax instead where he felt he would be given more regular football.

It has proved a shrewd decision as he's gone on to play over 40 matches this season, helping them reach the Europa League final which they lost 2-0 to Manchester United on Wednesday.

"Obviously I would like to play for Barcelona," he told Radio Barcelona on Thursday when asked if he would be interested in moving to Camp Nou.

"It is a huge compliment [to be linked with them]. Who doesn't want to play for a club as big as Barca? Everyone wants to be part of a team like that, they're one of the world's elite."

However, he was keen to add that "right now I am completely focused on Ajax."

Despite the reports in the Spanish press, it is unclear if Barcelona will go back in for Sanchez this summer. They are expected to sign another defender but may opt for a slightly more experienced option.

Samuel Umtiti has impressed in his first season at the club and is likely to be Gerard Pique's first-choice partner next season.

Young Brazilian Marlon Santos has also done well in the last two games, wins over Eibar and Las Palmas, and he could have a future in the first team.

However, there are question marks over Javier Mascherano and Jeremy Mathieu.

Barca are keen to hold on to Argentina international Mascherano but he may feel inclined to look for a move in a World Cup year if he feels he does not feature highly in the new manager's plans, while the club are prepared to let Mathieu leave.
