Man United's Jose Mourinho open to offers for Chris Smalling - sources

STOCKHOLM -- Jose Mourinho will listen to offers for Chris Smalling this summer, with Phil Jones being handed another chance to prolong his Manchester United career, sources have told ESPN FC.

Smalling and Jones are battling it out for a place in Mourinho's team alongside Daley Blind for Wednesday's Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm with suspension ruling out Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly.

But while Smalling has an outside chance of starting the game if he proves he has overcome the toe injury which forced him to miss Sunday's Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, Mourinho now regards the 27-year-old as having fallen behind Jones, Bailly and the injured Marcos Rojo in the pecking order at centre-half.

Blind, considered primarily as a left-back by Mourinho, will remain at centre-half against former club Ajax after impressing in the role since taking the place of Rojo following the Argentine's cruciate knee ligament injury last month.

Smalling has twice been the subject of public criticism by Mourinho this season, with the United manager singling him out for missing a Premier League game at Swansea in November and then suggesting his recovery from a knee injury last month was not quick enough.

He has nonetheless made 35 appearances in all competitions for United this season, but with Mourinho preparing to make a move for Burnley defender Michael Keane, three years after United sold him to the Turf Moor club, Smalling is facing the exit, seven years after arriving from Fulham.

Arsenal have previously displayed an interest in Smalling, with Arsene Wenger a confirmed admirer of the England international.
