Mauricio Pochettino tells Tottenham stars to ignore transfer speculation

LONDON -- Mauricio Pochettino has urged his Tottenham Hotspur players to focus on football and ignore speculation about their futures.

Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Dele Alli, Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen are among those to have been linked with moves, and Pochettino said Spurs, second in the Premier League, were facing an unprecedented level of speculation about their stars.

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez had been quoted as claiming Dele Alli could join Manchester City, while Eriksen's former Ajax coach Frank de Boer has said the Dane is good enough to play for Barca.

Tottenham's players are tied to long-term contracts but could feasibly double their money elsewhere, and Pochettino suggested heads had already been turned.

"It's important to ignore the rumours," he told a news conference ahead of Wednesday's visit to Crystal Palace. "Never before [have there been this many rumours] here.

"Today there are 20 names in the media about players from Tottenham that will move in the summer.

"The richest clubs are all focused on our players. I'm not worried, but I need to care about that situation and make sure we don't lose focus.

"They are so young and sometimes it's not their fault, but they lose a little bit of focus on the most important things and start to spend time thinking about their situation, about if an offer arrives from a club to double their salaries.

"That's why this message is important. If it happens, it always happens at the end of the season. If it happens, we'll take a decision.

"Now the club, for many reasons, deserves to be focused on trying to win games. And afterwards if you cannot win, it's because it's football but not because you spent time thinking about your future.

"For now, be focused on trying to win games and enjoy our passion for playing football. If not, you'll start to be worried."

In previous years, Tottenham have sold big-name players including Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale to bigger clubs.

But Pochettino has said they will only sell the players they want to sell in the summer.

Tottenham can cut the gap to leaders Chelsea to four points if they can win at palace, who have been revitalised under the management of Sam Allardyce.
