Wojciech Szczesny's Arsenal future hinges on Arsene Wenger exit - Boniek

Wojciech Szczesny would prefer not to return to Arsenal if Arsene Wenger remains as their manager, according to the president of the Polish FA Zbigniew Boniek.

Szczesny's loan at Roma expires in the summer and he is then due to return to Arsenal, where he has a contract until 2019. The goalkeeper initially joined the Serie A side in 2015 following the arrival of Petr Cech.

"I had dinner with Szczesny and he told me that he would like to stay at Rome," Boniek told Italy's Centro Suono Sport radio. "If Wenger stays, I don't think he will go back to London, while his contract expires in 2019 anyway.

"I can therefore see two possibilities: either Arsenal recall him, or they name their price. It's 100 percent certain, though, that he would like to remain in the [Italian] capital."

Szczesny is currently Roma's regular No. 1, missing only their Europa League and Coppa Italia fixtures, when coach Luciano Spalletti prefers to give his understudy Allison a chance.

As long as Spalletti remains in charge next season, that is set to continue, and Boniek cannot see there being any changes.

"I think [Spalletti] needs to stay at Roma, but I wouldn't give him a three-year contract, and knowing him I don't think he would want such a long contract either," the former Juventus and Roma midfielder added.
