U.S. international Aron Johannsson could look at "different options" in the summer should his situation at Werder Bremen not improve before the end of the Bundesliga season, a source close to the player has told ESPN FC.
Johannsson, 26, has only featured eight times for Bremen this season after returning from a long-term injury last summer. He started in the club's first two matches and came off the bench another six times, and only twice in 2017. He has not featured in any of the last four league games in which Bremen won 10 points.
On Monday, Bremen coach Alexander Nouri told reporters that the attacker, who won the last of his 19 caps for the USMNT in a 4-1 defeat to Brazil on Sept. 8, 2015, needs to show his credentials in training and "work toward getting another chance."
However, Johannsson, whose first daughter Alba Aronsdottir was born on March 11, could in the summer be on his way out of Bremen after two difficult years at the Weserstadion.
"Johannsson is at that age where he needs to play regularly," a source close to the player told ESPN FC, and added that he could look at "different options" in the summer if the situation does not improve.
Having joined Bremen from AZ Alkmaar on a four-year deal in 2015, a hip injury limited him to only six appearances in his first year at the club. He has scored three goals in a total of 14 games for Bremen, and contributed one more assist.
