Southampton committed to keeping Virgil Van Dijk amid Man City links

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk will not be sold in the summer, according to the club's chairman Ralph Krueger.

The Netherlands international has been linked with moves to Manchester City and Liverpool after impressing since his switch to the Premier League from Celtic in 2015.

Van Dijk was linked with a move to the Etihad in the January transfer window and there has been speculation that City could try to complete a deal at the end of the season.

However, Krueger has said the 25-year-old, who signed a six-year contract at Southampton last May, will not be going anywhere.

"We are just out of the January transfer window and are striving to keep this group together and to build on it," he told Sky Sports.

"Virgil is very committed to us for a long time and we don't see anything but that in our future. He is our team captain and we don't see him anywhere else than in red and white stripes."

Southampton have sold many of their best players in recent transfer windows with Saido Mane, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana all moving to Liverpool, Victor Wanyama joining Tottenham Hotspur, Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw sold to Manchester United and Jose Fonte exiting for West Ham United.

Krueger says Southampton can now hold on to their top players and that includes captain Van Dijk, who was named the club's player of the season at the end of the last campaign.

"We don't want to do what we did in the last three summers every year," he added. "We would like to move away from that and we feel confident this summer will be a lot quieter in Southampton and we can keep the core of this team moving forward for a few years.

"That is going to be important when you see how excellent the group is right now and how exciting the football is. The game we are playing is a pleasure to watch and a pleasure to be part of."
