Lionel Messi's new Barcelona contract 'going really well' - Robert Fernandez

Negotiations to extend Lionel Messi's contract at Barcelona are going "really well," according to the club's sporting director Robert Fernandez.

Fernandez's comments come as Catalan media report that following discrete talks between president Josep Maria Bartomeu and Messi's father Jorge, Barca have now drawn up a proposal which will be put to the player imminently.

Messi's current terms expire in 2018 and there has been regular speculation about whether he will renew or not.

Comments from club directors earlier this month raised further doubts about the Argentine international's future, with the English press reporting that Manchester City remained interested.

However, Bartomeu reassured supporters that Messi was going nowhere and Fernandez has now added that discussions are progressing, with talks also underway to hand new deals to Andres Iniesta and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

"Leo's renewal is going well, really well," Fernandez said at a Mundo Deportivo gala on Monday.

"I'm calm about it, as I was before with [Javier] Mascherano, [Sergio] Busquets, [Luis] Suarez and Neymar. That's how I am [now] with Messi and also with Iniesta and ter Stegen. We are working on it and I'm convinced that everyone will continue at Barcelona.

"It's not important who renews first. There are people that want to intoxicate the situation, but we've been working on it for a long time."

Diario Sport reports that the offer to Messi will be until 2022 and that recent new contracts for Suarez and Neymar were a key part of convincing him to stay.

Bartomeu has already said that the club are prepared to make him the best paid player in the world and Fernandez is in awe of how, despite turning 30 later this year, he just seems to keep getting better.

He added: "Leo's reached a point where it seems that he's playing even better than he was three, even five years ago. He's better all the time. He can pull a rabbit from a hat at any time and from any situation on the pitch.

"Leo is the best player in the world. There's no doubt. I've been close to [Diego] Maradona, [Johan] Cruyff, [Alfredo] Di Stefano ... but Leo is different."
