Lyon working on deal for Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj - report

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has said he hopes to "pull off a big surprise" amid speculation the Ligue 1 club are working on a deal to sign Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.

L'Equipe reported that former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier, currently an advisor at Lyon, has already made contact with ex-United boss Louis van Gaal to discuss Januzaj, who is currently on loan at Sunderland, as well as Memphis Depay.

However, the French newspaper said Lyon are not planning a move for Netherlands international Depay as he is deemed to be out of their price range.

Aulas gave little away on the identity of the club's targets but hinted they may be based in the Premier League, saying: "Currently we're trying to pull off a big surprise, but we have to be discreet.

"I don't know if it will happen, but Gerard is going to help because we need to speak English for this operation."

L'Equipe suggested Januzaj, who has provided just a single assist in 13 Premier League appearances for Sunderland this season, would join on loan until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent, and is seen as a potential replacement for Rachid Ghezzal.

Lyon youth academy product Ghezzal has joined Algeria for the African Nations Cup this month and has yet to sign a contract extension with just six months left on his current deal.
