Sevilla 'working on' signing new striker in January transfer window

Sevilla are looking to add a striker during the January transfer window to reinforce their squad ahead of the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Andalusian side drew 0-0 at Lyon on Wednesday evening to qualify for the round of 16 for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.

But, the 4-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb aside, they have only managed three goals in five Champions League games.

Asked if his club was already working on signing a No. 9 in the next transfer window, president Jose Castro told Cadena Cope radio: "[Sevilla sporting director] Monchi is continuously working on that. We have to wait to see what the best option is.

"Once our director makes a decision, we will act but the transfer market has not opened yet.

"Our aim is to go as far as possible in the Champions League and this club will try to do all it can to have the best team possible for the next round."

Sevilla only scored seven goals in their six Champions League games -- four less than Juventus, who topped Group H.

Wednesday's goalless draw was enough to see Sevilla join Juve in the next round.

"We have done what we needed to do," Castro said. "The team had to suffer but we got the job done. To be in the next round gives me great joy.

"We are very proud to have won three consecutive Europa League titles but we didn't want to play again in that competition.

"We want to make history in the Champions League. We are now in the last 16 and we want to go as far as we can.

"This season our aim is the Champions League and we want to continue to grow."

Castro believes his team can compete against the best.

"All the teams that are left in the competition are strong, difficult and complicated," he said. "But so are we. Whoever we get next is going to be hard, just as whoever has us as opponents will feel the same way."

Sevilla are third in La Liga and play at Celta Vigo on Sunday.
