Manchester United's Guillermo Varela joins Eintracht Frankfurt on loan

Manchester United have confirmed Guillermo Varela has joined Frankfurt on a season-long loan.

Varela, 23, came on as a substitute during Jose Mourinho's first game in charge, a 2-0 win against Wigan, but did not travel to China for United's preseason tour.

With Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all ahead of Varela in the right-back pecking order at United, Mourinho was willing to let the Uruguayan leave for the Bundesliga in order to find regular football.

The loan is with a view to a permanent move, sources have told ESPN FC.

Varela, who joined United in the summer of 2013 from Penarol, made 11 appearances under Louis van Gaal last season, but failed to figure after March following United's Europa League exit to Liverpool.

He spent the 2014-15 season on loan with Real Madrid Castilla while in April 2016 he scored the goal that clinched the under-21 Premier League title for United.
