Wolfsburg sign Real Madrid's Borja Mayoral on season-long loan

Wolfsburg have completed the signing of Spanish forward Borja Mayoral on loan from Real Madrid for a season.

The 19-year-old will spend the coming season with the Bundesliga club and should both clubs be happy with his progress over the next 12 months, his loan deal will automatically be extended.

"We've had our eyes on Borja Mayoral for a long time now and we're really pleased that he has now decided to join Wolfsburg," said the Bundesliga club's director of sport Klaus Allofs.

"He is still right at the beginning of his career and can now take the next step.

"It is part of our strategy that, in addition to promoting our own youth, we also provide a stage for top talented players from abroad to develop, as was the case with Josip Brekalo and Victor Osimhen.

"He's already proven his goalscoring threat. He's technically adept and is certainly going to be given the time that he needs to get used to the Bundesliga and be integrated into the team."

Mayoral's arrival follows the departure of Germany forward Andre Schurrle to Borussia Dortmund earlier on Friday.

Mayoral featured only six times for Real's first team but was a regular for their youth and reserve selections, scoring 32 goals in 58 appearances.

"I want to play and possibly win as many games as possible with Wolfsburg," said Mayoral, who was top scorer of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Greece last year.

"We want to qualify for the Champions League. The team has the potential for it.

"I had a good feeling about Wolfsburg from the first moment. I wanted to come here because they are a great team with a great history and I am looking forward to my first training session and my first game, and getting to know my teammates."
