Frankfurt interested in signing Manchester United's Guillermo Varela

Frankfurt have confirmed to kicker they are interested in Manchester United right-back Guillermo Varela.

Varela, 23, made just eight first team appearances for the Red Devils in the 2015-2016 season, including the full 90 minutes of the 3-2 Champions League defeat at Wolfsburg which eliminated Louis van Gaal's side from the competition.

The Uruguayan joined United from Club Atletico Penarol in 2013, and spent the 2014-2015 season on loan at Real Madrid Castilla, Los Blancos' reserve team.

On Thursday, former Germany international Fredi Bobic, Frankfurt's new sporting executive, confirmed to kicker that Die Adler are interested in signing Varela on loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

This summer Frankfurt have already signed, among others, Jesus Vallejo and Omar Mascarell from Real Madrid. Vallejo arriving on a one-year loan and Mascarell on a three-year deal.

Also on Thursday, 33-year-old club captain Alexander Meier put pen to paper on a new deal and will now stay at the club until 2018.

The 2014-2015 Bundesliga top scorer joined Frankfurt from Hamburger in 2004. Meier has scored 131 goals in 353 competitive games for the club.

He told the club's official website: "The city, the people here, the fans in the stadium: Everything just fits."
