Manchester United in talks over signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan - sources

Manchester United are in talks with Borussia Dortmund about signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, club sources have told ESPN FC.

Mkhitaryan, 27, has one year left on his Dortmund contract and United are hoping to strike a deal for his signature for just under £30 million.

New United manager Jose Mourinho is looking to add pace to his midfield and as such has identified Mkhitaryan.

"We will assess his situation this week," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told kicker, adding that "assessing" means the club will also "solve it" before beginning preseason on July 4.

"We not only need to discuss it with [sporting director] Michael Zorc and [coach] Thomas Tuchel, but also with the bodies," Watzke said. "It is a difficult decision."

The Armenia international joined Dortmund from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013 for a fee of €27.5m.

Mkhitaryan had an impressive 2015-16 season, scoring 11 league goals and providing 15 assists to help his team to second place in the Bundesliga.

Mourinho's United have already brought in Villarreal defender Eric Bailly for around £30 million during the current transfer window.

This summer, Dortmund have sold Mats Hummels to Bayern Munich and Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City for a total of over €60m.

As with Mkhitaryan, both players had been going into the final year of their contract at the Westfalenstadion.

Watzke added: "There are three perspectives with every transfer: An economical, a strategic and a sporting. If the economical side becomes overwhelming it might happen that you make a different decision in the end."
