FC Dallas' homegrown winger Alex Zendejas has signed for Liga MX outfit Chivas, the club announced on Thursday.
ESPN Deportes' John Sutcliffe reported that Zendejas was in Guadalajara this week to complete his medical and finalize terms, with everything going smoothly between the player and clubs.
The Mexican club will pay FC Dallas and MLS a transfer fee of about $500,000, according to Goal.com.
Zendejas, 18, joined the FC Dallas academy in 2012 and has previously featured for U.S. youth national teams. He has played eight times with two starts in MLS, all in the 2015 season, and he was a key part of the U.S. squad of the 2015 Under-17 World Cup.
However, his transfer to Chivas will put his international future in doubt because Chivas have a club policy of only fielding Mexican or Mexican-American players who choose to represent the Mexico national team.
Chivas stressed in a statement that Zendejas was born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, but the MLS, U.S. Soccer and FC Dallas websites all list him as being born in El Paso, Texas.
Chivas coach Matias Almeyda said on Thursday that his idea is for the club to eventually only need to use players from the youth system, although for this upcoming Apertura, Guadalajara has acquired the services of Mexico international Jose Juan Vazquez, Nestor Calderon, Marco Bueno and Daniel Gonzalez.
Zendejas may have to impress with Chivas' under-20 squad before getting a shot in Almeyda's first team.
Chivas kicks off the Apertura campaign on July 17 away at Pumas.
