Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez 'an option' for Espanyol - CEO

Espanyol have confirmed their interest in signing Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez but said a deal is not close.

AS has reported that Madrid are considering adding Juventus striker Alvaro Morata to their squad for next season, despite earlier indications that they would only exercise their buy-back clause on the Spain international in order to sell him on at a profit.

The Madrid-based newspaper has since reported that Morata's arrival at the Bernabeu would prompt Jese to consider an exit in search of first-team football.

Espanyol, now coached by Quique Sanchez Flores, could offer Jese an escape route should he decide to move on.

"He is an option," Espanyol CEO Roman Robert told AS. "We are analysing the names of a lot of players who would be great to have.

"I don't know whether he would be an Espanyol player or not, but I do know that this is not close to being done."

He said there are numerous other options and that Jose Antonio Reyes, who has been released by Sevilla, "is on the list."

Asked about Valencia's Alvaro Negredo, Levante's Giuseppe Rossi and Sevilla's Fernando Llorente, he said: "Those three and many more."

Real Madrid attacking midfielder Marco Asensio spent last season on loan at Espanyol but will spend the summer at the Bernabeu.

The Catalan club could make a move to re-sign him should he prove surplus to requirements at Real.

Robert said: "We would love to have had Marco continue at Espanyol. We hope he returns and if he doesn't we will have to cover that position.

"We are very happy with his development and he is an option we would love to have."

Discussing transfers more generally, he said: "We have the challenge of having a good season and that is why we are looking for players who can work well with us.

"What I can say is that this team is being put together with players who will give us guarantees that they will make us enjoy football and so that the fans won't suffer."

He added: "We don't have a set budget for transfers. We are evaluating many opportunities, some require spending and others are free transfers.

"We know what kind of team we want for next season so that we can make a difference. If we find someone who will give us a good chance to do that, we won't let them escape."
