Zenit St Petersburg's Axel Witsel eyes Serie A, Premier League move

Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel has revealed how AC Milan once tried to sign him, saying that he would give it serious consideration if they or another club in Serie A or the Premier League were to make a move for him this summer.

The Belgian has played the last four seasons in Russia since joining Zenit from Benfica in 2012, but he told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport that now might be the right time to move on.

And England and Italy are the two destinations he says he would consider.

"I want a new experience and I don't know if it will be in the Premier League or in Serie A," the 27-year-old said. "I'm fascinated by Italian football and at the age of 27, it would be the right move for me to make.

"Milan did try to sign me before, it's true, but it was a long time ago now. Now I've only got the European Championship on my mind, though."

Roma and Milan have both been linked with a move for the midfielder, who is also reported to be a target of Chelsea and Tottenham.

Just a few days ago, he already expressed his desire to move to Italy or England, adding that "all that matters is that it's a big club. I want to move up a level and play in a big European club."
