Chelsea's Nathan to spend 2016-17 season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem

Chelsea youngster Nathan will remain on loan at Vitesse Arnhem next season, the Blues have announced.

Nathan moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Paranaense in a £4.5 million transfer last summer before immediately joining Vitesse on a season-long deal, where the 20-year-old was joined by fellow Chelsea prospects Lewis Baker, Dominic Solanke, Isaiah Brown and Danilo Pantic.

Hampered by a knee injury sustained in November, the Brazilian midfielder made 19 appearances in all competitions for Vitesse but failed to establish himself as a key figure at GelreDome, earning just four starts in a team that finished ninth in the Eredivisie.

Speaking to Voetbal International in May, Chelsea scout and advisor Piet de Visser said: "The Chelsea boys have a high basic level, therefore in England they don't understand why they are not playing regularly [at Vitesse].

"A guy like Nathan is a real No. 10, but it is incomprehensible that he never gets a chance in that position. Of course Chelsea are not satisfied with the lack of progress made by their players.

"If Vitesse want to keep these talents but not play them regularly, I would advise Chelsea to send them somewhere else."

Nathan has represented Brazil at U17 and U20 level, and first attracted wider attention with five goals in the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup.
