Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho: 'I won't be signing any player from Portugal'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that he will not be signing any players from Portugal in this summer's transfer window.

United did not make a move for 19-year-old Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches from Benfica, with reports that former manager Louis van Gaal had not wanted him, as the player joined Bayern Munich for around €35 million on May 10.

The club have been linked with Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes and Sporting Lisbon's Joao Mario but, despite the contacts of Mourinho's Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes, the new United boss insists he won't be turning to his homeland for any new arrivals.

Mourinho said during a lecture at Lisbon University: "I won't be signing any player from Portugal."

United have had a strong recent tradition of Portuguese players at Old Trafford, with Cristiano Ronaldo and then Nani having played key roles on the field under Sir Alex Ferguson. Though Bebe did less well after arriving from Vitoria de Guimaraes and Brazil international Anderson, who joined from Porto in 2007, also did not live up to expectations.
