Toni Kroos plays down links to Manchester City, happy at Real Madrid

Toni Kroos says he has had no contact with Pep Guardiola over a possible move to Manchester City this summer.

Kroos, 26, left Bayern Munich for Real Madrid two years ago after winning the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal Double under Guardiola.

In recent weeks, he has been linked with a switch away from the Bernabeu. But the Germany midfielder said he's not reading too much into the reports.

When asked whether Guardiola had contacted him about a possible transfer to Manchester City, Kroos told Suddeutsche Zeitung: "No, my crude answer is."

Asked if he feared being sold to make way for fresh faces at the Bernabeu, he added: "I don't have any worries, no.

"The media now says a lot hinges on the outcome of the [Champions League] final, but I have played two very good years here and have taken a central position in our game right from the beginning.

"Football is a fickle day-to-day business, but I think that my standing is good and I don't believe that this fate is awaiting me."

After failing to reach agreement over a new contract with 12 months left on his deal, Bayern sold him to Madrid. Guardiola wanted the player to stay at the club, not least because of his outstanding passing game and his ability to control the pace in midfield.

"Everyone has their special strength," he said. "And my strength is to have the ball and start good things with it. In the end it's like that: The more I possess the ball, the more dominant we play, and the more often we win."

Kroos believes that Guardiola has changed the way football is perceived in Germany by highlighting the importance of the midfield players.

"In the past what happened in the boxes was interesting in Germany, but what happened between them [did not matter]," he added. "But I have the impression that this is changing a bit now also in Germany.

"We owe that to Pep Guardiola with his distinctive love for midfielders and also to [national team coach] Joachim Low, who has a similar approach."

Kroos went on to praise his former Bayern coach: "Guardiola and I have the same idea of football. We talked the same language."
