Manchester United to offer Michael Carrick new contract - source

Manchester United are ready to offer Michael Carrick a fresh deal as they look to keep hold of the midfielder, a source close to the club has told ESPN FC.

Carrick, who turns 35 this summer and is out of contract, has seen talks over a new deal delayed as United wanted to resolve the club's managerial situation before making a decision.

United confirmed that manager Louis van Gaal had left the club on Monday evening after two years in charge at Old Trafford. The club have denied having a precontract agreement with Jose Mourinho, but he is expected to be their new manager.

Carrick's children were mascots for the final game of the season at Old Trafford against Bournemouth, and then he jointly hoisted the FA Cup with captain Wayne Rooney following last weekend's victory over Crystal Palace. That led to some speculation that he could be on his way out of the club.

Clubs at home and abroad have been monitoring Carrick's situation and were readying moves for the player this summer

However, a source close to United has told ESPN FC that United are preparing to offer Carrick a one-year extension, just like they did last summer, with Mourinho giving it the green light.
