Manchester United looking to sell Jonny Evans to Everton - sources

Manchester United are looking to sell Jonny Evans, sources have told ESPN FC, as the defender closes in on a move to Everton.

The centre-back, who could cost the Merseysiders up to £10 million, is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

And Louis van Gaal's willingness to let the Northern Ireland international go is a sign United are confident of signing a replacement.

United have had a €40m offer for Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos rejected and the former Premier League champions are reluctant to raise it, sources say, believing it is a fair price for a 29-year-old, which could open the way for a move for Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi.

Evans, who has entered the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, was overtaken by Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the pecking order for central defensive places last season.

Both Englishmen have signed new long-term contracts while Van Gaal can also call upon Marcos Rojo, who joined last summer, and youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair, who have also been rewarded with new deals.

Everton are short of centre-backs after releasing veterans Sylvain Distinct and Antolin Alcaraz at the end of last season.

They have already signed one player from United this summer with midfielder Tom Cleverley arriving on a free transfer.
