Joao Miranda completes Inter transfer from Atletico Madrid

Inter have announced the signing of defender Joao Miranda from Atletico Madrid.

Miranda, 30, had been linked with Manchester United and Manchester City since last summer after fine performances led Atletico to La Liga glory and the Champions League final in the 2013-14 season.

The versatile defender had initially decided in April to see out the remainder of his Atletico contract until the summer of 2016, but Inter have confirmed a deal for the Brazil international after he completed a medical on Tuesday.

A statement on the San Siro side's official website read: "Internazionale is delighted to announce that the paperwork has been completed and delivered to the Lega Serie A offices for the transfer of Joao Miranda de Souza Filho from Atletico Madrid.

"The Brazilian defender, who recently played in the 2015 Copa America and won the 2009 Confederations Cup with the Selecao, penned his contract after passing his medical tests in Milan."

The player said via Twitter: "I am very happy to announce that I am officially an Inter player. I want to thank the club and fans for the warm welcome in Milan. I will give all my strength and professionalism."

Inter president Erick Thohir said of the deal: "Miranda is another important addition for Roberto Mancini and our new Inter.

"He is an experienced player who is as eager as we are to get started on this new adventure.

"The new season is just around the corner and will be an exciting time for us and for the fans. Forza Inter!"

A statement from Atletico read: "Now Joao Miranda begins a new stage in his career for which we wish good luck from Atletico Madrid."

The move is the latest in a busy period of transfer activity from Diego Simeone's side. Atletico are to match the €35 million release clause in Jackson Martinez's Porto contract, while Arda Turan looks set to exit the Vicente Calderon.
