Manchester United are ready to rekindle their interest in Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne after seeing Dani Alves stay at Barcelona, sources have told ESPN FC.
United had cooled their interest in Clyne as they had been keen to sign Alves on a free transfer, but the Brazil international ended speculation over his future by signing a new deal at Barca on Tuesday.
United boss Louis van Gaal has made a new right-back one of his top priorities this summer and he is now drawing up his list of targets after missing out on Alves.
As a result, England international Clyne, who has established himself as one of the most in-demand full-backs in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, is now firmly back on United's radar.
Liverpool are also in the race to sign Clyne and saw an offer for the defender rejected last month.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to improve his options at full-back for next season and Clyne has been identified as a potential replacement for Glen Johnson, who is leaving Anfield this summer at the end of his contract.
Clyne's future at Southampton has been the subject of speculation for some time, with the 24-year-old entering the final year of his contract and yet to agree a new deal.
Saints chairman Ralph Kruger has told the Daily Echo that "healthy and respectful conversations" have taken place with both Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin over contract extensions.
Kruger added: "Maintaining the squad strength we have right now would already be a huge step for Southampton Football Club, because the continuity in the group will create synergies within the team that will already make you a better squad.
"So anything we add to this group would already be a huge step, because keeping the group together itself, or this level, is the minimum goal that we have and we believe we can fulfil that."
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has reported that Southampton are working on a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares.
