Cheick Diabate's late strike saw Bordeaux defeat Evian to win their first Coupe de France title in 26 years at the Stade de France.

Diabate opened the scoring for Les Girondins in the 39th minute before he missed from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Yannick Sagbo then levelled for Evian three minutes later but Bordeaux edged ahead in a thrilling final through Henri Saivet's close-range volley.

Brice Dja Djedje again equalised for Evian and the game looked to be heading towards extra time until Diabate popped up with an 89th-minute winner to claim the trophy for Bordeaux for the first time since 1987.

Diabate proved to be a constant nuisance for the Evian defence and he set his stall out early when he forced a fourth-minute save from keeper Bertrand Laquait after latching on to Ludovic Obraniak's testing ball into the box.

Evian's first chance of the game came midway through the first half when veteran midfielder Olivier Sorlin's free-kick picked out Ebert Betao, who headed just over the bar.

Diabate then broke the deadlock six minutes before the break when Mariano released the striker inside the penalty area, who feinted a shot before firing into an empty goal despite defender Cedric Cambon's attempts to block the ball on the line.

Laquait ensured the deficit remained at just one goal at the half-time whistle with a fantastic reflex save with one hand to Saivet's volley, and he again came to Evian's rescue in the 48th minute when he dived to save Diabate's penalty after the midfielder was hauled down by Milos Ninkovic.

Evian hit back through Sagbo minutes later when Kevin Berigaud freed Daniel Wass on the right, who beat Mariano and crossed inside the penalty area where Sagbo volleyed past Carrasso.

Bordeaux were soon back in front, though, when Saivet volleyed Gregory Sertic's free-kick home at the far post in a thrilling second period. Laquait then denied Diabate's rebound strike after Saivet's 20-yard strike was saved by the Evian keeper.

It was all hands to the pump for Evian, who were bidding to win their first Coupe de France final, as Cambon cleared a Diabate header off the line.

Evian pulled the game back to 2-2 thanks to Dja Djedje's strike amidst a goal-mouth scramble and they looked to be taking the game into extra time before Diabate scored the winner.

Sagbo made a poor clearance from a Bordeaux corner where Ludovic Sane retrieved the ball and quickly freed Nicolas Maurice-Belay, who flicked to Diabate inside the penalty area to beat Laquait from a close range.

It was a cruel finish for Evian who had tried hard to get back into the game, but Bordeaux remained well organised and dominated the match and were deserved winners of the trophy and a place in next season's Europa League.
