Wellington breathed a sigh of relief after surviving some late pressure to close out a 1-0 win over fellow A-League strugglers Perth in Auckland.
A first half Jeremy Brockie goal - his 11th of the season - was enough to lift the Phoenix off the bottom of the ladder and drop the Glory to last place.
Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert says he always felt a contest between two desperate sides would produce a tight scrap and he believed his players deserved the victory.
"It was like the old days - grafting through and defending well and getting the result - so I'm pleased," he said.
"It's three points. It gives us a small amount of relief."
After a run of four losses to start the year, the Phoenix have gained four points from their past two games.
They face a tough assignment to maintain momentum in their next outing - away to leaders Central Coast on Thursday.
They will also be without defender Ben Sigmund, who picked up his fifth yellow card and an automatic suspension with a second-half challenge on Chris Harold.
For Perth, the result at Eden Park on Saturday added to their frustrating run of narrow defeats this season.
All 10 of their losses have been by a one-goal margin, and eight of them, including the past three, have been by the 1-0 scoreline.
Coach Ian Ferguson was again left bemoaning his side's lack of cutting edge up front.
He felt the Glory matched the Phoenix, if not controlled large parts of the game.
"The quality in the final third was what let us down - the final pass, the final cross, the decision making," he said.
"We had great moments in the game where we had some great chances and we don't even make the goalkeeper work."
After a cagey start by both sides, it was Perth who created the first real opening.
A superb through ball from former Phoenix midfielder Nick Ward put Harold clear.
The 20-year-old found himself one-on-one with 'keeper Mark Paston but, under heavy pressure from the chasing Manny Muscat, poked his shot wide.
The game's decisive moment came in the 41st minute.
After an elusive run by Phoenix recruit Isaka Cernak, the ball went wide to Paul Ifill, whose cross was headed home at the far post by a diving Brockie.
The contest began to open up in the second half, and the Glory had the better of the closing exchanges, but the equaliser eluded them.
