A goal by Marco Streller 10 minutes from time was enough to guide Basle to their first victory in this year's Europa League as they claimed a deserved 1-0 win over Videoton in Group G.
The Swiss side ground out victory although their Hungarian visitors could have been beaten by half-time had it not been for goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic who was in inspired form.
The hosts almost went ahead in the ninth minute when Alexander Frei's on-target header was superbly kept out by Bozovic in the Videoton goal.
Marcelo Diaz's volley from the right wing was gathered by Bozovic before the goalkeeper was again called upon as he thwarted Streller's close-range header.
The visitors finally had an effort on goal, Filipe Oliveira's lob from distance sailing over the bar.
And again Videoton had reason to be grateful to Bozovic as he blocked Frei's shot from the six-yard box, the ball going out for a corner which was headed over by Gabian Schar.
Sandor Torghelle's shot was comfortably gathered by Basle keeper Yann Sommer in his first real involvement in the game which was somehow goalless at the break.
It was a dull opening spell to the second half, Alvaro Brachi drilling a free-kick wide for Videoton but the midway point arrived with no real shots on goal.
David Degen fired over from distance for Basle but there was no sign of a breakthrough by either side.
However, with just 10 minutes to go the hosts went ahead. Mohamed Salah passed from the left, finding Streller who drilled the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.
Victory moves Basle to third, one point behind Videoton, with Sporting Lisbon - who have just one point - next up.
