Corini makes winning start

Eugenio Corini made a winning start to life as coach of Chievo as the Flying Donkeys ended a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria at the Stadio Bentegodi.

Corini replaced Domenico di Carlo earlier this week and the change in command paid immediate dividends with goals from Cyril Thereau and David Di Michele earning them only their second win of the campaign.

Enzo Maresca was on target for Samp, who were beaten for the second weekend running after going down to Napoli last Sunday.

Corini took his place on the bench for the first time and watched as his side started with a lot of verve.

Two volleys, one at each end, were the first threats to goal with neither Thereau nor Maxi Lopez able to beat the respective goalkeepers.

In the 13th minute, Marcelo Estigarribia's hit the top of the crossbar with a snapshot which had Stefano Sorrentino beaten, but there were no more moments of danger until the first half approached its conclusion.

Then, as the referee was about to send both sides to the dressing rooms, Chievo struck.

Thereau took advantage of some poor defending to break through and beat Romero in a one-on-one situation to give the hosts the half-time lead.

Ciro Ferrara apparently found the right words to lift his side as Samp levelled on the hour mark.

Maresca scored direct from a free-kick from a central position after Estigarribia had been fouled just outside the area by Perperim Hetemaj.

Chievo, who had been on top of the game until then, had to start all over, but it was a sign of their new-found belief that they did not throw in the towel as they had done recently, costing Di Carlo his job.

Instead, they attacked and forced the stroke of fortune which led to them winning the game.

Di Michele tried his luck from fully 30 yards out and Romero made a hash of his attempt to keep it out, gifting Chievo a winner three minutes from the end.
