Arbroath ended Alloa's unbeaten record with a 1-0 victory at Recreation Park.
Paul Hartley's second-place side went into the clash unbeaten in five matches in the Scottish Second Division, but it was Arbroath who came out the livelier of the two sides in the opening 45 minutes.
However, it wasn't until just before the break that the visitors managed to edge themselves in front when player-manager Paul Sheerin's pass was received by Derek Holmes on the left-hand side of the penalty area. The striker hit a left-footed shot high into the top-right corner of the goal to give Sheerin's men a deserved lead.
Alloa's best chance of the game came 12 minutes from the end when Ryan McCord's right-footed effort was tipped round the post by Arbroath's Scott Morrison.
That was as good as it got for the hosts, as Arbroath's victory saw them move into the play-off places.
