Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt shared a goalless draw in a game of two halves at the Dreisamstadion.
The visitors had the better of the first half and created several chances to take the lead, while Freiburg responded well in the second, going even closer to breaking the deadlock.
In the end, both teams had to settle for a point which keeps them in fourth and fifth, respectively, in qualifying berths for European football next season when their mutual aim was merely to avoid relegation.
Frankfurt thought they had taken the lead in the 12th minute, but the linesman's flag halted their celebrations after Stefan Aigner found the back of the net.
The visitors kept pushing forwards with Aigner once again falling foul of the Freiburg offside trap a few minutes later before heading wide of the goal.
Aigner was being afforded far too much time and room and his next shot only just missed the target in the 16th minute.
Freiburg struggled to free themselves from the Frankfurt pressure and spent much of the first half penned inside their own half.
Their first real attempt on goal came after an hour's play when Jan Rosenthal's header was cleared off the line by Stefano Celozzi, who repeated the act to deny Matthias Ginter moments later.
It was Freiburg's turn to attack and force Frankfurt on to the back foot, and they came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the 76th minute.
Max Kruse received the ball from Jonathan Schmid with only Kevin Trapp to beat, but the Frankfurt goalkeeper made a fine save to deny him.
Freiburg had the last chance of the game in the 85th minute when Rosenthal headed the ball into the danger area, but Johannes Flum could only head over the crossbar.
