Nigel Worthington was unable to secure a win in his first game at Bootham Crescent as York and Rochdale shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw.
York started brightly and created their first effort on goal within three minutes as Jason Walker and Matty Blair teamed up with Shane Cansdell-Sherriff diverting the winger's goalbound shot for a corner.
Chances were at a premium in the opening stages but the visitors should have taken the lead through George Donnelly. The striker raced clear on goal after outmuscling Jack O'Connell but he could only shoot tamely at Michael Ingham.
Some positive play from Ashley Chambers down the right created a chance for Blair at the far post but he could only scuff his effort wide of the target. Blair then turned provider for Walker minutes later with the frontman firing his effort over Josh Lillis' goal.
The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock in the second half was when York's John McGrath had his effort tipped over in the dying minutes.
