Evian left Troyes in deep trouble at the wrong end of the Ligue 1 standings by cantering to a one-sided victory in their crunch relegation encounter in freezing Annecy.
Both sides began the evening mired in the bottom three but a goal in each half by Cedric Barbosa ensured Evian pulled three points clear of danger and into mid-table.
Defeat for Troyes means Jean-Marc Furlan's men remain with just nine points from 16 matches, having managed only one win all season, and now sit bottom of the pile, eight points from safety.
Evian came into tonight's match - played in sub-zero temperatures at Parc des Sports - looking to rediscover the form that had brought them two wins and two draws from four games prior to their 4-0 defeat to Paris St Germain at the weekend.
And there was little to concern the home players or their fans in the 90 minutes that followed, with Troyes failing to muster any sort of threat and Evian's margin of victory only kept in check by some excellent work by visiting goalkeeper Yohann Thuram.
The hosts carved out their first chance in the 17th minute when Yannick Sagbo released Brice Dja Djedje but his shot from the edge of the area was punched away by Thuram.
Two minutes later Evian threatened again, this time Barbosa's corner finding the head of Aldo Angoula but again the goalkeeper was in the right place to make the save.
The opener arrived on the half-hour when Kevin Berigaud advanced down the right and picked out a pass for Barbosa who did superbly to send a right-footed volley high into the net.
Two minutes into the second half Thuram was in action again, turning Barbosa's shot from distance around a post, while on 49 minutes the pair continued their duel as the goalkeeper kept a low shot at bay.
Thuram continued to remain the only bright spot for Troyes as he denied Sagbo in the 62nd minute, but Evian's second finally arrived 19 minutes from time, Barbosa tapping the ball into the empty net after Saber Khelifa's initial effort had been saved.
