Real Madrid's Luka Modric banned for Super Cup for red card three years ago

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric will be banned for Sunday's Spanish Super Cup first leg at Barcelona.

Modric, 31, must serve a suspension picked up for a sending off in Los Blancos' last appearance in the Super Cup three years ago.

Modric picked up a second yellow card late in the second leg at Atletico Madrid in 2014, a game won 1-0 by Diego Simeone's side for a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Spanish federation rules at that time stated that players must serve a suspension in the competition in which the offence was committed, although since March 2015 bans picked up in the Super Cup have been served in subsequent La Liga games.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has options to fill in for Modric at the Camp Nou, with fellow Croat Mateo Kovacic and summer signing Dani Ceballos the most like-for-like replacements if he wants to continue the midfield diamond shape deployed in Tuesday's 2-1 UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United.

Zidane could also bring in playmaker Isco, and return to a 4-3-3 system by giving Cristiano Ronaldo a first start of the season. If Ronaldo is still not ready for 90 minutes following his late return for preseason, youngster Marco Asensio could come into the forward line.

Modric will be free to return for the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Zidane has no injury worries ahead of the weekend, with his full squad having trained on Thursday morning in Madrid, with youngsters Achraf Hakimi and Luca Zidane also joining in.

"After winning the UEFA Super Cup in Skopie, the team returned to training at Real Madrid City as they prepare for the next challenge: The Spanish Super Cup," a club statement said. "With the team focussed on Sunday's clash with Barcelona, Zinedine Zidane led an intense session which saw Achraf and Luca from Castilla, train with the first team.

"The players carried out an intense warm up before carrying out several possession and ball control exercises. The session ended with a game on a reduced size pitch."
