Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo best on the wing - Zinedine Zidane

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane says Cristiano Ronaldo is at his best on the wing, not playing as a central striker, and backed the star to break his two-game goal drought.

Ronaldo, 32, has played up front for his club this season, and also did so for Portugal as they won Euro 2016, but has not scored in his last two games: a 3-1 win over Napoli in the Champions League and a 2-0 win over Espanyol in La Liga.

Zidane, though, is in no doubt how to use Ronaldo in his team.

"He's always played out on the flank," Zidane told a news conference.

"That's his natural position. I'm sure he will score goals. He can play in a variety of positions because he's an outstanding player. But he prefers playing out on the wing. That's where he's scored 300, 400 goals?"

The Frenchman also suggested that Ronaldo could be rested in the coming months as Madrid fight for domestic and Champions League honours.

"I think it was a cup game if I'm not mistaken," he said of the No. 7's previous unforced absence.

"And I'm pretty sure there'll be another game or two when he'll be rested. But he'll play on Wednesday [against Valencia], definitely."
