Lambert puts on brave face

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert tried to put a brave face on his side's 4-0 defeat against Tottenham at Villa Park.

Villa, smarting from their 8-0 rout at Chelsea, managed to keep Spurs at bay in the first half.

But there was only one winner after Jermain Defoe fired Spurs ahead in the 57th minute and Gareth Bale cashed in with a 13-minute hat-trick.

Asked if the Chelsea and Spurs losses had come out of the blue after impressive cup and league wins at Norwich and Liverpool, Lambert told Sky Sports News: "I'm not surprised by anything in football.

"Things can happen. You know it can happen, especially when you are playing one of the top sides.''

Villa's defeat leaves them fifth-from-bottom with the worst goal difference in the Premier League.

Spurs boss Andre Villa-Boas was understandably happy with a win that lifted his side into fourth place, two points behind Chelsea in third.

"It was very good from start to finish,'' he said. "We fully deserved it.

"It didn't happen for us in the first half but we kept our concentration and came on very strong in the second half.

"If one team was going to win it, it was us and overall it was a very good performance.''
