Boca Juniors claim Apertura title

Boca Juniors clinched the Argentinian Apertura title in style as Dario Cvitanich scored twice in a 3-0 home win over Banfield.

Needing just a point to be sure of finishing top, Boca put the league's bottom side to the sword to take the title with two games to spare.

Cvitanich put them ahead in the 11th minute after a scramble in the Banfield goalmouth.

His decisive strike into the bottom left corner from six yards was the fourth attempt on goal in the space of seconds.

Cvitanich put Boca 2-0 clear a minute before half-time when his volley from 12 yards took a helpful deflection to go just out of reach of Banfield goalkeeper Cristian Lucchetti, finding the bottom right corner.

It was 3-0 inside two minutes of the second half as Diego Rivero scored the outstanding goal of the game, a 30-yard drive into the top left corner.

Victory lifts Boca 11 points clear of second-placed Racing Club with two games remaining.

Tigre were the only team who could theoretically catch Boca heading into the weekend, as they trailed the leaders by nine points with three games to play. But Boca's win takes them 12 clear of Tigre, ending that remote chance.

Towards the bottom of the table, Independiente and Newell's Old Boys battled out a 1-1 draw, with Pablo Perez putting visitors Newell's ahead after 18 minutes and Martin Benitez levelling in the 51st minute.

Godoy Cruz came from behind with 10 men to draw 1-1 away to Belgrano Cordoba.

Nicolas Olmedo was sent off after 24 minutes for Godoy Cruz, and they fell behind in the 55th minute when Cesar Manzanelli netted, but Ruben Ramirez managed an equaliser two minutes later.
