Australia to host friendly with Malaysia

The Socceroos will play Malaysia for the first time in nearly 20 years when they go head to head in an international friendly in Canberra next month.

It's the seventh meeting between the two sides but the first since 1992, when Malaysia defeated Australia 1-0 in a clash in Jakarta.

The match, scheduled for October 7 at Canberra Stadium, will also be the first time the Socceroos have hosted Malaysia on Australian soil. It will serve as a real test for the squad as they prepare for their third 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier against Oman at Sydney's ANZ Stadium just four days later.

The Socceroos are currently leading group D with six points after defeating Thailand 2-1 and Saudi Arabia 3-1. Oman sits on the bottom of the group on one point, equal with Saudi Arabia.

As the Malaysia clash will be held on a FIFA match date, the strongest possible Socceroos squad will be available for selection.

The last time the Socceroos played at Canberra Stadium was in March 2009 when they lost to Kuwait in a 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification match before a crowd of more than 20,000.
