Swiss roll into semi-finals

Switzerland cemented their place at the top of Group A and all but booked their place in the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championship as goals from Fabian Frei and Innocent Emeghara gave them a 2-0 win over Iceland.

The Swiss beat tournament hosts Denmark 1-0 in their opening match and quickly hit their stride at the Aalborg Stadium when Frei cracked home a venomous shot in the opening minute. The midfielder finished following a delightful pass over the Iceland defence from Xherdan Shaqiri.

Emeghara added a deserved second on 40 minutes. The Nigeria-born striker raced away from the Iceland defence to strike a left foot shot that hit goalkeeper Haraldur Bjornsson and bobbled over the line.

The second half was uninspiring as the group leaders took their foot off the gas. Rurik Gislason had an effort ruled out for offside, but the Icelandic team rarely threatened Yann Summer's goal.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Nicolai Jorgensen kept his side's hopes of place in the semi-finals alive with a sublime winner in a 2-1 victory over Group A rivals Belarus in Aarhus.

The Danes needed to win to avoid tumbling out of their own tournament and went behind after 20 minutes to a Dimitri Baga strike. But Jorgensen, who was omitted from the starting line-up for his nation's opening defeat at the hands of Switzerland, inspired a fight back.

The Bayer Leverkusen winger drew the penalty that allowed Christian Eriksen to equalise in the 22nd minute then danced through midfield and arced a long-range shot into the far corner with just 19 minutes left to play.
