Pirates plunder SA title

ESPNsoccernet staff

Orlando Pirates took the South African league title on the final day of the season as they won the trophy on goal difference from rivals Ajax Cape Town.

The Pirates, coached by former Dutch World Cup captain Ruud Krol, beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1, while Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw by Maritzburg United.

Ajax had looked in control after going into the break 1-0 up, but an error by veteran goalkeeper Hans Vonk, playing the last game of his career, saw Maritzburg equalise and a penalty with half an hour left put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

Retiring coach Foppe de Haan saw his side get an equaliser, but it was not enough to defend their title as Isaac Chansa's 84th minute winner for Pirates ensured the Soweto giants claimed their first league trophy since 2003 - which secures their place in next year's African Champions League.
