Monterrey closed in on a place in the Clausura semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Unam Pumas in the opening leg of their last-eight clash.
Monterrey needed just 11 minutes to take the lead through Osvaldo Martinez, with Walter Ayovi doubling the advantage 10 minutes later and Humberto Suazo adding another two minutes after the interval.
Martin Bravo reduced arrears in the 70th minute but it was little more than a consolation for Pumas, who also had Jehu Chiapas sent off in the final stages.
Club America were beaten 2-1 at home by Morelia in the first match of their quarter-final. Manuel Perez gave the visitors a 17th-minute lead which Marquez Lugo extended after 61 minutes.
Substitute Daniel Marquez got America on the scoresheet nine minutes later, just three minutes after coming off the bench, but they were unable to add to their tally and now face a tricky return leg in Morelia.
