Gers delighted with cup success

Man of the match Steven Davis celebrated a Scottish League Cup final win over Celtic which he insisted Rangers deserved.

Nikica Jelavic netted in extra-time to win the game 2-1 for Rangers after the 90 minutes had ended all square following first-half goals from Davis and Joe Ledley.

Davis told BBC1 Scotland: "It was a difficult game to play - we knew we had to press Celtic and overall I thought we thoroughly deserved our victory."

Rangers manager Walter Smith added: "I thought the team played exceptionally well.

"I thought, although I'm slightly biased, that we deserved to win. I've always been proud of the group and I'm delighted for every one of them."

Asked about his emotions on what was his final trip to Hampden Park as Rangers manager, he said: "Anything else that surrounds it doesn't really matter.

"We'll enjoy tonight and then we'll start thinking about our next game, against Dundee United."

Rangers captain David Weir added: "I thought our attitude was outstanding. We played really well and scored a couple of good goals."

Weir admitted the pre-match build-up which saw Celtic installed as big favourites made the victory sweeter.

He added: "It gives it a little edge, I can't deny it."

Assistant manager Ally McCoist was delighted with the first trophy of the season. Although Rangers were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Celtic, they are in a tight race with their Old Firm rivals for the league.

He said: "That's the first piece of silverware but we'll enjoy tonight and then go about defending our title."
