The Reds, who had picked up just one point from their previous three matches, opened the scoring through Paul Reid in the sixth minute.
Archie Thompson levelled just after the hour when he curled a shot into the top-right corner from close range, but Adelaide skipper Travis Dodd clinched the three points for his side with 12 minutes remaining when he sent a powerful header beyond Michael Petkovic.
Victory had chances to rescue a point with Carlos Hernandez and Thompson both going close before the final whistle but Adelaide held on.
Adelaide will now play either Newcastle Jets or Wellington Phoenix in the first set of play-off semi-finals next weekend.
Wellington currently occupy the final play-off spot but if they lose at home to North Queensland Fury on Sunday and Newcastle win away at Central Coast Mariners, the Jets will climb into sixth spot and book a date with Adelaide.
The other two A-League semi-finals have already been decided; Central Coast Mariners face league winners Brisbane Roar, while Goald Coast United take on Melbourne Victory.
