With Fernando Torres expected to sign for the Blues in a £45 million deal, Sturridge has been allowed to move to the Reebok Stadium in search of first-team football.
Sturridge, 21, joined Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2009, although he has started only two Premier League games under Carlo Ancelotti, making a further 24 appearances as a substitute.
"I'm really pleased to have Daniel with us," Bolton manager Owen Coyle told the club's official website. "He's a terrific young talent and one of the most exciting strikers in the country. We're all looking forward to working with him."
Sturridge said: "I spoke with the manager and he outlined what he hopes to achieve and his plans. It was an easy decision to sign for Bolton Wanderers and I'm looking forward to linking up with the squad on Tuesday."
