Savage, 36, is out of contract at the end of the season and is almost certain to leave Pride Park, but he has now revealed he has rejected the offer to play abroad as he did not want to uproot his family.
"I'm going to stay here," Savage wrote on Twitter. "Canada was a great option but it was too big a move for my family, so it's going to be media full time in august or another club!
"It was a massive call but I've worked hard in the media to get where I am and took good advice off people it's the right choice. So for the first time ever I will be out of contract in the summer."
Savage began his career as a trainee with Manchester United before playing for Crewe, Leicester, Birmingham and Blackburn. He joined Derby in 2008.
