New Zealand international Nelsen was contracted to Rovers until next year, but penned a new one-year extension two days after new boss Steve Kean agreed terms that will keep him at Ewood Park until 2013.
Nelsen, 33, joined Blackburn from DC United in 2005 and has been a first-team regular throughout his stay, making in excess of 200 appearances for the club.
He captained his country in last year's World Cup and, last month, was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to football.
