Former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel has signed for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Angel is a free agent after his contract at New York Red Bulls, where he is the all-time leading goalscorer, expired.

The 35-year-old joins David Beckham and Landon Donovan as one of Galaxy's three Designated Players.

"I'm anxious to start this new challenge in my life and will do my best to bring back another championship to this city," Angel said in a statement.

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena was in charge of the Red Bulls when Angel first arrived from England, and he is optimistic about his new signing.

"He has been one of the best goal-scorers in MLS over the last four years and I fully expect that he will be a productive and consistent player in a Galaxy uniform," Arena said.

Angel joined Villa for a club-record fee in 2001 from Argentine outfit River Plate and went on to score 44 goals in 175 Premier League games for the Birmingham-based side.
