The Football Federation of Australia (FFA) were the only bidder for the event but still needed to go through the proper bidding process by making their presentation to the AFC's executive committee.
"Today [Wednesday] the AFC met and decided Australia would be the host nation for the 2015 Asian Cup,'' AFC president Mohamad bin Hammam said in Doha.
"We considered all the achievements made in Australia towards the development of football and to encourage the next step in developing the game, we are happy to announce the AFC has approved Australia to host the 2015 Asian Cup.''
The decision comes a month after Australia failed in their bid to host the 2022 World Cup after receiving just one vote from FIFA's executive committee.
Qatar - hosts of this month's Asian Cup which gets under way on Friday - were instead awarded the hosting rights.
