Lens appoint Boloni as new manager

Ligue 1 strugglers Lens have confirmed the appointment of Laszlo Boloni as their new manager following the departure of Jean-Guy Wallemme.

Lens have won just three league games all season and currently only lie above basement club Arles in the standings three points from safety.

Chairman Gervais Martel told the club website that the change had been made after Wallemme informed the club in the wake of last month's draw against Bordeaux that he was willing to step down.

Martel said: "After the match in Bordeaux, Jean-Guy Wallemme expressed his willingness to be removed from his responsibilities. After consultation, we accepted this decision and we focused our recruitment on Dr. Laszlo Boloni, who will have the task of keeping Lens in Ligue 1.''

Boloni, 57, has plenty of experience of coaching in the French top flight after spells in charge of Nancy, Rennes and Monaco. He recently spent three months working with the Al-Wahda club in Abu Dhabi, after resigning as Standard Liege boss in February of last year.

His first game in charge will be against St Etienne on January 15.
