Sporting sign German goalkeeper Hildebrand

Sporting have announced the signing of Germany international Timo Hildebrand on a one-year deal.

Hildebrand, who had been linked with a move to Celtic over the summer, was available on a free transfer following his release by Hoffenheim.

The 31-year-old was a Bundesliga champion with Stuttgart in 2007 and broke into the German national side, but a mixed spell with Valencia saw his career stagnate.

"I think that Sporting is the right club for me," Hildebrand told the club's official website. "I was hoping to receive a few proposals, especially because I was unattached, and I am really happy that Sporting is interested in me.

"This is a great chance to continue showing what I am worth, but in another country. Sporting is one of Europe's most known clubs and it has a long history; it is also the team where stars like Figo and [Cristiano] Ronaldo stated out.

"I am going to be playing in a huge team that is playing in the Europa League this year. I want to adapt as quickly as possible, both to the team and to the country.

"All of this is new for me, but I hope that I get the chance to meet my new team-mates as quickly as possible. I am going to give my best to help Sporting."
