Ward quits Melbourne to join Phoenix

Nick Ward has ended his two-and-a-half year stint with Melbourne Victory after the 25-year-old joined Wellington Phoenix.

The former Queens Park Rangers midfielder joined Melbourne in 2007, making 59 appearances for the club in the A-League and the Asian Champions League.

However, Ward has found opportunities limited of late and moves to Phoenix in search of regular football.

"I'm sad to be leaving Melbourne but the prospect of first-team football at the Phoenix was obviously very appealing," he said. "I want to be playing week in, week out and I feel I have a better chance of regular football with Wellington

"I've enjoyed my time in Melbourne and met some great people along the way. We're parting on good terms and I wish the guys the best of luck for the rest of the season."

Wellington coach Ricki Herbert expects Ward to augment his side's attacking threat.

"Nick's a good addition to the squad and adds depth into the midfield in a more attacking role," he said.

"He's the sort of midfielder who gets more advanced and he has a great engine."
