Roque Santa Cruz says Paraguay must beat Japan and reach the quarter-finals after revealing he is planning to retire from international duty.

Paraguay reached the second round in 1986, 1998 and 2002, but they have yet to go any further.

On Tuesday, they face Japan - who have never beaten South American opposition at the World Cup - and Santa Cruz, 28, says the campaign should be judged a failure if they do not progress.

"This will be my last World Cup, so I hope it will be my best," he said. "Anything less than the quarter-finals means nothing."

He added: "This is the best Paraguay team ever. We have never been to the last eight. It is our goal. Everything is possible if we do that. We have beaten Argentina and Brazil (in qualification), two of the world's best teams."
